Happiness Through Harmony
An Interview with Heather Rizutto:
Singer, Song Writer, Member of Mulberry Lane
(August 14, 1998)

Meet Heather Rizutto

You might say Heather was born into music. Having a mom that was a professional singer, she and her three sisters (Jaymie, Rachel, and Allie) learned to sing at an early age. This passion for music grew with her continued practice, participation, and education. The four sisters make up the group Mulberry Lane and are meeting with success after several years of touring and recording. Their current album, Don't Cry 'Till You Get to the Car is currently selling well in the Midwest and charted number 45 on the national CIMS chart (Coalition of Independent Stores) and number seven regionally. You can read more about Heather and Mulberry Lane at www.radiks.net/mulberry and their album can be ordered through national Blockbuster Music and Border's stores.

Success Is...

Success is being happy with what you are doing and when you can go to bed at night and be satisfied with what you did during the day. I would say that we are fortunate because we love what we are doing. I think of it like the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street. His job is to eat cookies and our job is singing, which for us is great.

quoteWe laugh and tease my sister about it sometimes because when she was really young she was holding a door open for someone who asked, "Are you a doorman?" She said, "No, I'm a singer."

Passions

Our passion was always music. We laugh and tease my sister about it sometimes because when she was really young she was holding a door open for someone who asked, "Are you a doorman?" She said, "No, I'm a singer." Our interests revolve around the music including writing and poetry. It all ties in to what we're doing.

I think our passions were influenced by our parents. Our Mom was a professional singer and she taught us how to sing. When we were little, it was about entertaining and making people have a good time and as we grew up and matured, it's more about communicating emotionally.

All of our lives have been a musical journey of finding our voice and ourselves artistically. You try things musically and the point where we really found ourselves is the point where people really started latching onto us. We had worked with a lot of producers in the past and recorded in LA and New York and Nashville and it was a great learning experience for all of us, but we finally realized we fit right at Mulberry Lane where the roots of music really is. So that's when we came back and produced the album ourselves.

quote Some advice I was given a long time ago is to surround yourself with positive people.

Positive People

Some advice I was given a long time ago is to surround yourself with positive people. To me this is so important. Whether they're positive about their relationships or their jobs or a book that they read, that energy is contagious. This can help you get inspired about what you are doing in your life.

quoteWork as if it all depends on you and pray as if it all depends on God.

My Philosophy

There are two philosophies that help me stay driven and optimistic. One is what my Dad always says, and that is to "run your own race." When you start worrying about what others are doing you loose focus on the goal which is running your own race. And the other one is "stay the course." If it truly comes from within and from the heart you can't go wrong.
