Giving It All Up?
Brian's Journal, June 12, 1998
Seventeen days until the road calls us into action. Actually,
we've made quite a bit of progress in the planning and prep side
of Quest-4 and have been called into action already. We have completed
our first couple of insightful interviews and have lined up a
couple of others here in Southern California.
Before hitting the road, I'm still trying to sell the last vestige
of my former "life"--my BMW. It's amazing when I look back over
the past nine months since my arrival back in the US from my three-year
adventure in Hong Kong. I was living what most would consider
the "successful" life that so many people dream of. I had the
nice car, apartment, and "dream" job, consulting in the high profile,
high-tech industry in Silicon Valley. I had worked and traveled
overseas and was becoming well-versed in the "good life."
Fortunately, I was able to continue to reflect on who I was and
where I truly wanted to be. I'm not saying that I won't miss
the nice dinners and fancy things. Heck, I'm not even advocating
a lifestyle that says you have to "give it all up" to become truly
happy. It's just that for me, at this time in my life, it was
important for me to take a stand before the trappings of "success"
clouded my vision and dreams of what I want to become in the future.
I'm not sure what I'll find on this quest, but I'm sure that whatever
it is, it'll be different and challenging. I can't wait.
