Feasting On Life's Lessons
Brian's Journal, July 12, 1998
Well, we made it through two weeks on the road. Fourteen days
in new places, meeting new friends, and experiencing new things.
In only two weeks, I've managed to get a 48-hour flu bug, drove
over 2,000 miles, wondered around the wilderness explored at
one time by Lewis and Clark, saw a movie, went to a Pow-Wow, saw
a whitewater kayak tournament, went canoeing and swimming, signed-up
for an archeological dig, and actually had some time for some
"work." So, I guess now is a good a time as any to recap and
reflect on what I've learned so far...
1) Time is a relative concept
I must admit that time seems to be a ever-changing concept nowadays.
Already it feels that the pace of our trip may be too fast and
that we'll never be able to accomplish everything we wanted to
accomplish in six months on the road. With no "deadlines" (other
than those self-imposed by our project), days roll into each other.
I've found that our designated deadlines are at times more demanding
than a "normal" job. Maybe that's always the case--we push ourselves
more than anyone else can.
2) People are more giving than you can imagine
Sometimes I forget just how generous people can be. Luckily,
I'm reminded everyday on the road. From the people who let us
eat their food and crash on their floors, to the lady I met at
the Pow-Wow who offered me a Coke just for saving her space in
the taco line. Small little things that people do everyday that
make a difference in the lives of the people they touch. Watch
for it and be amazed.
3) Life is cool
In case you haven't figured it out yet, life is cool. Look around
and coolness is everywhere. Actually, I think that sometimes it's
so close to us that we overlook all the exciting and wondrous
things that are available to touch, taste, see, and feel everyday.
I'm learning to not get as wrapped up in the routine of life,
but to live it and love it with gusto.
So, while I digest these morsels of truth, I look forward to the
continued feasting on life's little lessons.
