Don't Sweat the Petty Things,
and Don't Pet the Sweaty Things
Brian's Journal, July 16, 1998
It must be nice to be a dog. I've been contemplating this more
and more lately. We've had the pleasure of staying with some mighty
fine canines on this trip. There was Davis the Wonder Dog in Sacramento,
and Molly D (as in Dog) and all of her friends: Sparky, Little
Dog, Lassie-Wanna-Be, and Baby Gordita in Idaho.
Yes, for the past week we've been living in Dog Heaven out here
30 miles from Boise in the great backyard of Idaho. Here the dogs
run free, chase the coyotes, and play around in the hot sun barking.
Out here in the country, the dogs wander in and out of my Aunt
and Uncle's house as if it was their own. Granted my Aunt and
Uncle are tolerant people that love animals, but I must admit
it was a bit strange having breakfast with the neighbor's pets.
I quickly got used to it and learned a lot from the company.
What I noticed most is how easy it was for them to find "success"
in their daily lives. Whether it was chasing a ball thrown into
a field or waking me up with a lick to the face, they seemed to
enjoy life to the fullest. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get
excited about the little things in life, like eating dinner, going
for a run, or playing with friends. Second I learned that it's
important to approach life with curiosity. The dogs all had this
knack for exploration. And third, I learned that naps are good.
There's something refreshing about kicking back on a hot afternoon
for a short snooze before jumping up energized and ready for anything.
Being around these animals has made me more aware of the simple
pleasures in life. So I leave you now to take a nap and practice
what I've learned.
