Big Sky Guy
Brian's Journal, July 19, 1998

I'm a "Big Sky" guy. There's something about a huge sky that picks me up, shakes my soul, and makes me feel complete. I like a sky unobstructed by buildings, mountains, and trees. A sky where sunsets and storms consume the horizon.

I think it was the years living in Nebraska watching a million colors wash over the landscape at dusk that fed my present love. I was reminded of this "sky-thing" today in Wyoming, outside Sheridan. Chris and I were sitting atop a hill around 9:00pm watching a show that no man could ever create. It started with a dazzling sunset that grew from the red and blue and purple lights and ended with a lightning storm that moved gracefully along in the distance until all you could see were a billion stars glowing overhead.

I've seen sunsets over the skyscrapers of Hong Kong, the pier in Santa Monica, and the mountains of Appalachia, but nothing compares to the sunsets I've seen in the lands where 360 degree views are commonplace.

The trouble with these scenes is that there is no possible way to describe or replicate the experience. No words can do them justice. No photograph can ever match the scale and detail. Oh, we can try. And we can get some amazing scenery, but you must be there to truly experience it. I recommend you see for yourself sometime. I hope this Big Sky Guy never stops seeing them.
