Battleground Or Playground
Brian's Journal, September 16, 1998

Do you treat life like a battleground or playground? Do you expect life to be a constant struggle with change, hostility, and stress. Or alternatively, do you treat life with the open playfullness of a child where new worlds exist and excitement abounds?

It's hard sometimes when we're bombarded with negative messages from all over to remember that life's not always as bad as it's portrayed. Spend some time with children and you'll soon be reminded. At least that has been our experience when we've had the opportunity to stay with friends and family members who have children.

Kids have a great capacity to smile, laugh, and generally have fun; things we sometimes neglect as time goes by. Life to them is a playground to be enjoyed to its fullest. I'd venture to say that the majority of children stress little over the ramifications of Sesame Street and the global effect of Cookie Monster's cookie consumption. When was the last time you heard a child ridicule Barney because he's a different color than the other dinosaurs? Their world is new, fresh, and full of opportunities.

The bottom line is that kids generally know how to have fun, be it with the latest Beenie Baby or the box it came in. I'm hoping to dump my battleground view of the world for the view of a new sandbox. I'm anxious to see what happens. Care to join me?
