Good Omen (or Sky Hook at the Buzzer)
Chris' Journal, June 28, 1998

Many cultures believe in omens, things that help guide you or point you in the right direction. Omens can come in many forms: a crow perched on the window sill, a fruit tree in the desert, a discarded coin found at an opportune moment. Some Omens steer you away from an ill fortune, others send you off along a path of wonder.

We had an Omen. It was our last few minutes in Los Angeles. The Jeep was packed, the good-byes had been said, and our bellies were full from our first (among many) stops at Taco Bell. Brian and I stood to go, anxious to get on the road and begin our adventures, and as we walked across the parking lot a jade green Jeep pulled in front of us and slide across our path in slow motion.

And there he was.

Seated behind the wheel of the vehicle it was hard to see his size, but his huge hands griped the steering wheel and his smile gave him away. Brian and I looked at him, then at each other: Kareem Abdul Jabar!

The Jeep slid past us and through the drive through, opening the way to our own vehicle once more. Kareem had come to see us off, and in the city of Los Angeles you can't get a better Omen than that.
