"Give me the beat boy to save my soul, Music has such a way of adding to the quality of life. With the proper tune even the most mundane event can become enjoyable and entertaining. All you need is the right soundtrack. We all have taken songs and music and made them our own. Songs from childhood that conjure up fresh images, smells, and special memories. The Cars' Magic brings me back to the summer I learned to drive. Prince's (as he was known back then) Purple Rain transports me to high school, while when I listen to Hey, Hey What Can I Do by Led Zeppelin I am sitting in Kilroy's bar at Indiana University. These songs no longer belong to their creators; they are forever mine and a part of my memory. And isn't it incredible that all these songs at one point began inside the head of a stranger. They bounced lyrics and tunes around and finally felt compelled to drop them onto paper. They then were recorded and played and soon people like me were singing along with them in the shower, or at work, or on a cross-country road trip. We take the songs to heart and add them to our personal soundtracks. The soundtrack for the Quest-4 adventure is now being written. Already, thanks to the parting gifts of some close friends, tunes from Garbage and the Smashing Pumpkins latest are anchoring onto the event and our memories of it. How great it is to know that years from now I'll listen to Special and think of the bright, full moon hanging over the plains outside Boise. Or how Ava Adore will bring back the scent of cheap instant coffee at a rest area between Portland and Washington on Highway 5. Stop. Listen. Hear and enjoy your own soundtrack. Feel the music and hear the words. Make up your own. Take artistic license. But whatever you do, keep on rockin'. © Chris Moeller, 1998
