Pushing Titles Aside
Chris' Journal, July 20, 1998

Titles are everywhere. And unfortunately we use them here in our site as well. We as a society are so hooked on what a person does and what their title is. We need the title to try to associate with that person: Is she a doctor? Is he a fisherman? Is she an accountant? This is how we relate.

Unfortunately, we all have preconceptions about what these titles represent. When we hear them we automatically conjure up our own images and ideas about that person based on what they "do". Whatever our individual backgrounds and upbringing dictate, that is how we initially perceive that person.

And what do titles really say anyway. They tell you how that person makes his money to do the things he needs to do to survive. Titles often say little about the person, their hopes or dreams, personality, and inner self.

I have no answer to this problem, I wish I did. I wish I could say: John Doe, great father, caring son, compassionate community member. How different an image would this create than saying "salesman".

So when you read our interviews and see the titles listed by the person's name, please take a moment to toss the title aside and listen to them as you would a friend, not a random _______ you met on the street. The titles are not important, its the person behind them that count.
